“Old Franklyn Township Historical Society presents
selected work of Franklyn Liegel”
June 24, 2018 – November 3, 2018
An exhibit at the Old Franklyn Township Historical Society presents selected work of Franklyn Liegel, late Los Angeles fine artist and teacher (1950-2012), to his home town of Plain, Wisconsin. It is an exhibit of “memories” of art making from Franklyn’s formative years in Plain and the Midwest to his 35 years of studio living “between the freeways” in downtown LA.
Franklyn had a fondness for fabric, and used in his art the materials he played with as a kid. He had a love of organic architecture and natural expression. He had a childlike nature with a focus on the present.
“Franklyn provides a gift for all who wish to see.” Ernest Velardi, Los Angeles Artist

“When Franklyn Liegel passed away in [2012 at the age of 61], the Los Angeles art world lost one of its most inspiring teachers, gentlest eccentrics, and most underknown talents. A master of color, form, and texture, Liegel was able to fuse paint, drawing media, and collage almost magically into a perfect hybrid of two and three dimensions. His art is joyous, tactile, rhythmic, and full of surprises, a kind of abstract animation that seems to dance even as it lies sewn to its surface. It deserves much wider recognition than it received in his lifetime.” Peter Frank, Los Angeles-Santa Fe, June 2012. |
